For motivation, internal motivation is superior to imposed, external motivation. But I think you’re making the point that accountability needs to be visible against an external standard that is more objective. And then that makes a framework and a structure within which you can have these internal developments. You could say, “Well, I felt I fell short. I feel crummy about that.” And you can wallow in that self-pity. Or you can pick up and say, “Okay, let’s make it better next time.”
